| biography:
| US governor, engineer, and educator, born in Seattle, Washington, USA. A naval reservist (1943–6, 1951–3), he served on the Armistice Commission at Panmunjon, Korea. After serving as a Washington state representative (Democrat, 1956–65), he founded an engineering firm in 1959. Washington's only three-term governor (1965–77), he improved the state college system and initiated ‘Education for All’ to serve the disabled. In 1977 he became president of Evergreen State College. |
