| Lawyer and public official, born in Annapolis, Maryland, USA. He studied in England at Eton and Cambridge, then returned to Maryland (1747) and established a thriving law practice. He served several terms in the Maryland assembly. He published a tract opposing the Stamp Act (1765), but remained loyal to Britain after 1776. US officials confiscated his property in 1781, and he spent the remainder of his life in obscurity. |
