| biography:
| Protestant missionary and educator, born in Georgia, Vermont, USA. He grew up on farms in Vermont and Ohio, graduated from Amherst (1852), attended Andover Theological Seminary, and in 1855 went to Syria as a missionary. In 1866 he founded the Syrian Protestant College (now American University) in Beirut, Lebanon, and as president and treasurer of the college until 1902, he continued to teach classes and deliver an occasional sermon after his retirement. |
