| Sociologist, born in New York City, New York, USA. A radical journalist in the late 1930s, he became a moderate liberal spokesman of distinctive intellectual power and breadth. He was labour editor of Fortune (1948–58), and spent most of his academic career at Columbia University (1952–69) and Harvard (1969–90). Of his many books, The End of Ideology (1960) and Cultural Contradictions of Capitalism (1976) attracted the widest attention. He co-founded and edited The Public Interest (1965–73). |
