| Actor, born in Algiers, Algeria. A deep, thoughtful actor with unconventional looks, his first cinema role was in L'Aggression (1975). Several films followed in which he demonstrated his acting skills, but he achieved national and international acclaim with his role of Ugolin in C Berri's Jean de Florette and Manon des Source (both 1986). Since then he has starred in many films, including Romuald et Juliette (1989, director C Serreau), Un Coeur en hiver (1992, director Sautet), La Reine Margot (1994, director P Chereau), Le Bossu (1998, director Philippe de Broca), Escort Boys (1998, director Michel Blanc), and The Lost Son with Nastasia Kinski (1998, director Chris Menges). A 1999 project was La Veuve de St Pierre with Juliette Binoche (director Patrice Lecoste). Awards include best actor Cannes 1996 and the César nomination. He is the former husband of Emmanuelle Béart. |
