| Television news presenter and writer, born in Wharton Texas, USA. Educated at Sam Houston State Teachers College, he became a television journalist for CBS in Dallas, then White House correspondent and London bureau chief (1963–74), becoming nationally known for his reports on such major events as the Kennedy assassination, Vietnam, and the Watergate affair. His national profile grew when he became co-editor of 60 Minutes (1975–81), and he went on to become anchor of CBS Evening News (from 1981). He has been involved in many other TV specials, and has written several books on television journalism. |
