| Actress, born in Bramhall, Greater Manchester, NW England, UK. She joined the Manchester Repertory Theatre straight from school in 1930, made her London debut in 1935, and her film debut in 1937. Her clarity of diction and spirited personality made her one of Britain's leading stage performers, while her sporadic film career includes performances of distinction in Separate Tables (1958, Oscar), Sons and Lovers (1960), and A Man for All Seasons (1966). Television appearances include Clochmerle (1973), Death of the Heart (1985), and The Countess Alice (1992). She was made a dame in 1975. |
