| Detective-story writer, born in Christchurch, New Zealand. She moved to England, UK in 1928, and published her first novel, A Man Lay Dead (1934). It was followed by a series of novels and short stories featuring Superintendent Roderick Alleyn of Scotland Yard. These include Vintage Murder (1937), Opening Night (1951), and Black as He's Painted (1974). She was made a dame in 1948. |
