| Athlete, born in Halewood, Lancashire, NW England, UK. She started competing in the pentathlon at the age of 17. She won the gold medal at her third Olympics in 1972, at the age of 33, setting a new world record (4801 points). She was also the Commonwealth champion twice, winning the shot as well in the 1970 Games. She campaigned for more sports facilities in Northern Ireland, and an athletics stadium in Belfast is now named after her. She was made a dame in the year 2000. |
