| biography:
| Ballet dancer and teacher, born in Warsaw, Poland. She was sent to Paris to study medicine, but became involved in artistic circles and instead took up dancing. In 1913 she worked on Stravinsky's Rite of Spring with Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. She moved to London, where she became a British citizen (1918). From 1926 she formed small companies to present classical and new ballets, promoting collaboration between painters, musicians, and choreographers. In 1935 she formed the Ballet Rambert, and remained closely associated with it through its change to a modern dance company in the 1960s. A strong supporter of young British choreographers, dancers, and designers, she was created a dame in 1962. |
