| Theatre and film actress, born in London, UK. She made her stage debut in 1925 at the Old Vic theatre, and gained fame as a character actress and comedienne, her gallery of eccentrics including ‘Miss Prism’ in The Importance of Being Earnest (stage 1939, film 1952) and ‘Miss Whitchurch’ in The Happiest Days of Your Life (stage 1948, film 1950). She also scored a success as Agatha Christie's ‘Miss Marple’ in a series of films from 1962. She won an Oscar for her role in The VIPs in 1964, and was created a dame in 1967. |
