| Academic, writer, and administrator, born in Melbourne, Victoria, SE Australia. She studied at Melbourne and Oxford universities, was professor of Australian literature at Sydney (1968–89) then emeritus professor, and in 1991 became chancellor of the university. She has held positions on a number of influential bodies, including the board of the Australian Broadcasting Commission (since 1947, chairman 1981–3) and the Universities Council (1977–86), and became a director of the Australian and New Zealand Banking Group (1983). She is a prominent member of the group ‘Australians for Constitutional Monarchy’, founded in 1992 in response to growing republican sentiment. She was created a dame in 1983. |
