| biography:
| Archaeologist, born in London, UK. She studied at Oxford, became lecturer in Palestinian archaeology at London University (1948–62), and then principal of St Hugh's College, Oxford (1962–73). She was director of the British School of Archaeology in Jerusalem (1951–66) when she accomplished her major work of excavating Jericho to its Stone Age beginnings, and revealing it to be the oldest known site that has seen continuous human occupation. |
