| Soprano, born in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, N England, UK. She studied at Birmingham University and the London Opera Centre (1965–66), making her debut with Opera for All (1964). Resident principal with Sadlers Wells (1967–8) and the Welsh National Opera (1968–70), she made her Covent Garden debut in 1969 and her US debut in 1977. She continued to perform with major opera houses around the world, and was made a dame in 1995. |
