| biography:
| Operatic soprano, born in Sydney, New South Wales, SE Australia. She made her debut at Sydney in 1947, moved to London in 1951, and joined the Royal Opera, becoming resident soprano at Covent Garden. She gained international fame in 1959 with her roles in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor and Handel's Samson. She has sung regularly in opera houses and concert halls all over the world, and in 1965 returned to Australia for a triumphant tour with her own company. In 1954 she married the conductor Richard Bonynge (1930– ), and was made a dame in 1979. In 1990 she gave her final performance at the Sydney Opera House. |
