| biography:
| Novelist, born in Pinner, NW Greater London, UK. She studied classics at London, and became a prolific writer. Her rather stylized novels have many features in common, being set in upper-class Victorian or Edwardian society; the characters usually belong to a large family, spanning several generations. Her first novel was Pastors and Masters (1925), later works including Brothers and Sisters (1929) and Mother and Son (1955, James Tait Black). She was made a dame in 1967. |
