| Actress, born in South Shields, Durham, NE England, UK. She studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, London, and first appeared at the Shaftesbury Theatre, London, in 1921. She gained fame mainly in historical roles in plays and films, such as Queen Elizabeth in Fire over England (1931), and Thérèse Raquin in Guilty (1944). She consolidated her reputation with memorable stage performances in Shaw's Captain Brassbound's Conversion (1948) and Ibsen's Ghosts (1958). She appeared in more than 60 films, and was created a dame in 1960. |
