| Soprano, born in Oldham, Lancashire, NW England, UK. She trained at the Royal Academy of Music and joined the Carl Rosa Opera Company (1916–24), making her debut in 1920 with the Royal Opera, Covent Garden. She was associated with the Chicago Civic Opera for many years. Known for her vocal power, she performed most of the leading parts of the dramatic soprano repertoire, notably as the Princess in Puccini's Turandot , a role she sang regularly from 1926 until 1948. |
