| Actress, born in London, UK. She earned a great reputation for her versatility, with many notable appearances in the plays of Shakespeare and Shaw. Her most famous role was as Lady Bracknell in Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest. During World War 2 she entertained the troops at home and abroad, and in 1946 was created a dame. In 1948, she made her first film appearance in The Queen of Spades, and she continued to be active on both stage and screen into her eighties. |
