| Actress, born in London, UK. She trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, London, and made her acting debut in 1950. She toured Russia with the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre (1958), made her first appearance in a contemporary play in The Devils (1961), and subsequently played many leading roles in classical and modern plays, including Queen Victoria in Portrait of a Queen (1965). She received a Variety Club of Great Britain Award for her role in the film Savage Messiah (1972). Later films included The Shooting Party (1984), Alive and Kicking (1997), and Maybe Next Year (1998). In 1999 she appeared in The Gin Game at the Savoy. She was made a dame in 1999. |
