| Actress, born in Doncaster, S Yorkshire, N England, UK. She studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and joined the Royal Shakespeare Company at Stratford (1959–64). After playing Emma Peel in the popular The Avengers television series, she joined the National Theatre (1972), making regular appearances during the 1970s. In New York her role in Medea (1993–4) earned her a Tony Award. Among her films are Evil Under the Sun (1982) and A Good Man in Africa (1994), and her television work includes Mother Love (1990, BAFTA) and The Mrs Bradley Mysteries (2000). She was made a dame in 1994. |
