| biography:
| Artist and illustrator, born in Paris, France. He studied chemistry in London (1851), but on returning to Paris adopted art as a profession. In 1860 he went back to London, where he gained a reputation as a designer and book illustrator. Finally he joined the staff of Punch, and became widely known as a gentle, graceful satirist of fashionable life. He wrote and illustrated three novels, notably Trilby (1894). |
