| Actress, born in Sydney, New South Wales, SE Australia. She began acting at the age of eight, and made her London debut at 14 in a musical version of Tom Jones. She later became widely known in musicals, pantomimes, and revues, having a great success in By-the-Way (1935), which also starred her husband, Jack Hulbert (1892–1978). She also appeared in several straight comedies, including her final West End stage appearance in Move Over, Mrs Markham (1971). She was made a dame in 1972. |
