| biography:
| New Zealand politician and public administrator, born in Auckland, New Zealand. She taught at Auckland University (1963–83), became an Auckland city councillor (1971–83), and then Mayor of Auckland (1983–90). The outstanding achievement of her mayoralty was the construction of a long-planned performing arts complex, the Aotea Centre. A popular and outspoken person with a wide range of community involvements, she became Governor-General of New Zealand (1990–6), the first woman to hold the position. She was made a dame in 1984. |
