| Novelist, born in East Jarrow, Tyne and Wear, NE England, UK. She did not begin to write until in her 40s, publishing her first novel, Kate Hannigan, in 1950. Most of her novels are set in the NE of England, several of them belonging to a series tracing the fortunes of a single character or family, such as Tilly Trotter (1981). Other novels include Rooney (1957), The Round Tower (1968), The Moth (1986), Branded Man (1997), and The Thursday Friend (1998). Her Kate Hannigan's Girl was published posthumously in 2000.
