| biography:
| British writer, born in Liverpool, Merseyside, NW England, UK. She began writing in the 1960s, and became known for her terse, black comedies, such as The Dressmaker (1973, filmed 1979), Filthy Lucre (1986) and An Awfully Big Adventure (1989, filmed 1995). Several novels tackle historical subjects, notably Young Adolf (1978), Watson's Apology (1984), and The Birthday Boys (1991). She has also written several plays, both for theatre and television. Later works include collections of her journalistic essays (1993) and stories (1994), and the novels Every Man for Himself (1996, Whitbread), Master Georgie (1998), and According to Queeney (2001). She was made a dame in 2000. |
