| biography:
| Dancer, born in Bromley, S Greater London, UK. She trained with the Royal Ballet, and appeared as a soloist for the first time in 1956 when, due to illness, she stepped into the main role of Swan Lake. It was an unprecedented casting move which brought her fame overnight. Her partnership with Anthony Dowell was one of enchanting compatibility, leading them to be dubbed ‘the Golden Pair’. A dancer of great sensuality and beauty, her roles in Frederick Ashton's The Dream (1964) and Kenneth MacMillan's Manon (1974) are among her most celebrated. A knee injury forced an early retirement in 1976. She became president of the Royal Academy of Dancing in 1991, and was made a dame in 1996. |
