| biography:
| Prima ballerina, born in London, UK. She danced with Ballets Russes in 1924, and on her return to Britain appeared for the Camargo Society and the Vic–Wells Ballet. There followed a period of partnership with Anton Dolin which led to the establishment of the Markova–Dolin Company in 1935. They made guest appearances together around the world, and were famed for their interpretation of Giselle. She retired in 1962, was created a dame in 1963, became a director of the Metropolitan Opera Ballet (1963–9), and took up an appointment as professor of ballet and the performing arts at the University of Cincinnati in 1970. In 1986 she became president of the London Festival Ballet (now the English National Ballet). |
