| Actress, born in Coventry, West Midlands, C England, UK, a member of a large family of actors. She appeared on stage at eight, from 1862 played in Bristol and, after a short-lived marriage and retirement, established herself as the leading Shakespearean actress in London, dominating the English and US theatre (1878–1902) in partnership with Henry Irving. In 1903 she went into theatre management, and toured and lectured widely. She was made a dame in 1925. |
