| Actress, born in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, EC England, UK. She trained as a pianist, but turned to the stage, making her debut in 1904, and joining a repertory company in Manchester. In 1924 she played the title role in the first English performance of Shaw's Saint Joan, and during World War 2 was a notable member of the Old Vic Company. She married the actor Lewis Casson in 1908, and was made a dame in 1931. |
