| Swedish statesman, and secretary-general of the UN (1953–61), born in Jönköping, S Sweden. After teaching at Stockholm University, he was secretary (1935) then chairman (1941–8) of the Bank of Sweden, and Swedish foreign minister (1951–3). At the UN, he helped to set up the Emergency Force in Sinai and Gaza (1956), and worked for conciliation in the Middle East (1957–8). He was awarded the 1961 Nobel Peace Prize after his death in an air crash near Ndola, Zambia, while engaged in negotiations over the Congo crisis. |
