| biography:
| South Korean president (1997– ), born in Ha Eui (S Cholla Province), South Korea. Leaving school after his secondary education in Mokpo (he was later to attend Kyunghee University), he made a fortune in shipping. Much of this was spent during the 1950s in an unsuccessful attempt to enter politics. After overcoming difficulties in his private life, he was finally elected to the National Assembly in 1962. He ran for president in 1971, 1987, and 1992 before finally being elected in 1997. An opponent of South Korea's military governments, he was sentenced to death in 1980 before being reprieved after the intervention of US President Reagan. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2000 for his groundbreaking efforts to achieve reconciliation with North Korea. |
