| biography:
| Clergyman and inventor, born in Auchterhouse, Angus, E Scotland, UK. He invented a mechanical reaper, the prototype of which earned a £50 premium from the Highland and Agricultural Society in 1827. Its adoption by British farmers was very slow, however, but when four of his reapers were sent to the USA they enabled Cyrus McCormick and others to develop (from 1831) their full potential. |
