| Agronomist, born in Chatfield, Minnesota, USA. After earning his PhD from Cornell (1898), he studied at the University of Göttingen, Germany. At the University of Illinois (1900) he classified Illinois soils as to their type, their chemical composition, and methods of management. In 1918 he directed the agriculture rehabilitation programme in Greece at the request of the Red Cross. Among his books are The Story of the Soil, From the Basis of Absolute Science and Real Life (1911) and The Farm That Won't Wear Out (1913). |
