| Anglican clergyman, born in Tongham, Surrey, SE England, UK. He studied at Keble College and Cuddesdon College, Oxford, and became Bishop of Southwark (1919–32), Bishop of Winchester (1932–42), then Archbishop of York. He was one of the most outspoken leaders of the Church, greatly concerned for the welfare of the impoverished dwellers in inner-city areas. Publications include The Church and Social Problems (1939) and a trilogy on Church and State (1947–52). |
