| Controversialist and popularizer of philosophy, born in Durham, Co Durham, NE England, UK. He studied at Oxford, became a civil servant (1914–30), then joined the philosophy department at Birkbeck College, London. He wrote 47 highly personal books, notably Guide to Philosophy (1936), and was a fashionable atheist until his last work, Recovery of Belief (1952). He is also remembered for his highly successful BBC Brains Trust intervention, ‘It all depends what you mean by ...’. |
