| biography:
| Writer, born in Minna, C Nigeria. He studied at Ibadan University College and the Chelsea School of Pharmacy in London. Early works include the novellas When Love Whispers (1947), The Leopard's Claw (1950), and People of the City (1954, revised 1969). His most successful novel was Jagua Nana (1961), about a group of vibrant characters who forsake their rural origins for the attractions of city life. His experiences of civil war are chronicled in Survive the Peace (1976) and Divided We Stand (1980). He has also written numerous folk-tales and stories for children. He was awarded the Dag Hammarskjöld International Prize in Literature in 1968. |
