| Novelist and short-story writer, born in New York City, USA. She studied at New York and Ohio State universities, publishing her first novel, Trust, in 1966. Her fiction explores the dilemmas of being Jewish in a Christian world, and she is perhaps best known as a writer of short stories, including The Pagan Rabbi and Other Stories (1971), Bloodshed and Three Novellas (1976), and The Shawl (1991). Later novels include The Puttermesser Papers (1997). |
