| British statesman, born in St Leonards, East Sussex, SE England, UK. He studied at Oxford, where he also taught after serving in World War 2. He was elected a Labour MP in 1950 and became secretary for education and science (1965–7), President of the Board of Trade (1967–9), secretary for local government and regional planning (1969–70), environment secretary (1974–6), and foreign secretary (1976–7). A strong supporter of Hugh Gaitskell, he was a key member of the revisionist wing of the Labour Party, and wrote one of its seminal texts, The Future of Socialism (1956). |
