| biography:
| Educator and abolitionist, born in Hopkinton, Rhode Island, USA. Her short-lived attempt to train young black women as teachers in her Canterbury, CN, boarding school (1833–4) provoked the passage of a local ‘black law’, and harassment ranging from arrest to violent attacks. She worked for women's rights and temperance throughout her life. |
