biography: Dutch ruler, born in Dillenburg, WC Germany, the second son of John VII. Educated in Geneva, he fought for the empire against the Turks, and joined Prince Maurice of Orange's army in 1609. In 1613 he converted to the Catholic faith, joined the service of the Archdukes Albert and Isabella and married Ernestine, Princess de Ligne. After the Twelve-Year Truce he fought in Spanish service as a field marshal against the United Netherlands and against France until his death. His brother William was a field-marshal on the Dutch side.
