| biography:
| Dutch countess, born in Maastricht, S Netherlands, the daughter of a Liège noblemen. For 25 years she was lady-in-waiting to Wilhelmina of Prussia, the wife of King William I of The Netherlands. After his wife's death in 1837, William wished to marry her, and eventually did so morganatically in 1841 as Count of Nassau, after his abdication. Among the opposition, who objected because she was both Catholic and from the Southern Netherlands, was the Crown Prince (later King William II), who paid for the publication of a pamphlet entitled Het huwelijk van Willem Kaaskop en Jetje Dondermond (The marriage of William Cheesehead and Harriet Thundermouth). She was reconciled with his family by her care for the king during his continued ill health. |
