| French diplomat, the illegitimate son of Napoleon and Maria, Countess Walewska, born in Walewice, near Warsaw, C Poland. At 14 he fled Poland to avoid service in the Russian army, later took French citizenship, and served in the French army in Algeria. Under Napoleon III he held various appointments, including that of ambassador to Britain (1851), and was foreign minister (1855–60) and minister of state (1860–3). |
