| biography:
| Dutch statesman, diplomat, and laywer, born in Zwolle, NC Netherlands. He became governor-general of the Netherlands East Indies in 1916–21. In favour of ‘Ethical Politics’, he believed that the rise of nationalism was inevitable, and advised that greater independence would be in the Dutch interest. His statements awakened expectations which Dutch government policy could not satisfy. Between 1922 and 1939 he was ambassador in Cairo, Berlin, and London. |
