| biography:
| Holy Roman Empress, the daughter of Ruggero II, King of Sicily. In 1186 she married Henry VI, heir to Frederick Barbarossa. She was imprisoned by her nephew, Tancredi, who staked a claim on the Sicilian crown, but was freed by Pope Celestine III. After Henry's death (1195) she tried to oppose German influence; she had Frederick II crowned King of Sicily in 1198 and made Pope Innocent III his guardian. |
