| Italian politician, born in Villa Castelnuovo, Piedmont, N Italy. He fought in the 1st Italian Independence War as a volunteer and became Massimo d'Azeglio's secretary in 1851. In 1856 he attended the Paris Congress with Cavour, and helped him in the negotiations with Napoleon III that led to the Plombières agreement (1858). He served as ambassador to Paris (1860–70), St Pietersburg, London, and Vienna. |
