| French film-maker of Greek origin, born in Athens, Greece. He studied literature at the Sorbonne, then became involved in film-making. His most notable films, Z (1969), Missing (1982), and Music Box (1990), all demonstrate his political commitment, dealing with complex situations such as the Junta in Greece, or Pinochet's regime in Chile portrayed through their effects on individuals. In 1982–7 he was president of Cinématheque Française. |
