| Last descendant of the Hohenstaufen dynasty, born in Wolfstein, SW Germany. The son of Conrad IV, he inherited a claim on the Kingdom of Sicily and the duchy of Swabia. After the death of his uncle Manfred at Benevento (1266), urged by the Italian Ghibellines, he went to Italy to claim the Kingdom of Sicily against Charles of Anjou. Excommunicated by Clement IV, he was defeated at Tagliacozzo (1268) and Charles had him beheaded. |
