| biography:
| Dutch statesman, born in Rotterdam, W Netherlands. From 1619 he was town secretary of Rotterdam, and from 1628 Recorder to the States-General. He took a leading part in the conflict between the States of Holland and Stadtholder William II. He was notoriously corrupt, selling state secrets to foreign ambassadors, but was exposed after his father-in-law, Pensionary of Holland and poet Jacob Cats, retired from office. He died before action could be taken against him; it has been suggested he may have committed suicide. His wife and daughter were also notorious for their improper behaviour. |
