| biography:
| Inventor, born in Alkmaar, The Netherlands. He prepared a map of Alkmaar, and designed a water-supply system for the town, then moved to England (1604), where he spent most of the rest of his life. Among his inventions were a clock driven by changes in atmospheric pressure, a new method for the manufacture of sulphuric acid, and a rudimentary submarine (1620) which was successfully tested in the R Thames. |
